How to Apply for a SASSA Grant: The Complete Process

Applying for a SASSA grant is free and, if you prepare properly, fairly straightforward. Most problems come from applying for the wrong grant or arriving without the right documents. Step 1: Choose the right grant

Each grant has its own criteria, so applying for the one that fits your situation is the single most important step. An older person applies for the Older Persons Grant, a caregiver for the Child Support Grant, and so on. Applying for the wrong grant wastes time and usually ends in a decline.

Step 2: Gather your documents

Most applications need your South African ID, proof of income, and proof of residence, plus documents specific to the grant — a child’s birth certificate for the Child Support Grant, or a medical report for the Disability Grant. Step 3: Apply through the correct channel

The SRD R370 grant is applied for online through the official SRD website. Most other grants are applied for in person at a SASSA office, because they involve original documents and sometimes a medical assessment. Knowing which channel your grant uses saves a wasted trip.
