Key takeaways

  • You can check your SASSA status for free — you never have to pay anyone to do it for you.
  • The official SRD website is the fastest method, but WhatsApp, USSD and the call centre all work too.
  • You only need your South African ID number and the phone number you used when you applied.
  • A status can change from month to month, so it is worth checking again before each expected payment.

Checking your SASSA status is the simplest way to find out whether your grant application has been approved, is still being processed, or has been declined for a particular month. The good news is that there are several official channels, all of them free, and each one uses the same underlying information. This guide walks through every method step by step, explains what you need before you start, and covers what to do when the status simply will not load.

Before we begin, one important reminder: this is an independent guide. We do not process applications or hold your personal information. When it is time to see your real status, you always do that on SASSA’s own services. For a quick overview of the channels, you can also visit our status check page.

What you need before you check

Every official channel asks for the same two pieces of information, so have them ready before you start:

  • Your 13-digit South African ID number — the same one you used on your application.
  • The mobile number you registered with — SASSA often sends a one-time PIN or confirmation to this number, so use a phone you can access.

Use your own details

If someone helped you apply and used their phone number, checking your status can be confusing because messages go to them. Where possible, make sure the registered number is one you control.

Method 1: The official SRD website

For the SRD R370 grant, the official website is the quickest and most detailed method. It shows your status for each month, which is useful because approvals are decided month by month.

  1. Open the official SRD site

Go to srd.sassa.gov.za in your browser. Check the address carefully — only this domain is the genuine SRD service.
  2. Find the status check option

Look for the link or button that mentions checking your application status.
  3. Enter your ID and phone number

Type in your 13-digit ID number and the mobile number you applied with.
  4. Read your monthly results

The page lists each month with a status such as approved, pending or declined. If you are unsure what a result means, our guide on SRD status meanings explains each one.

Method 2: WhatsApp

SASSA runs an official WhatsApp service that many people find easier than a website, especially on a phone with limited data. You send a message and follow the automated prompts. Because the exact number is updated from time to time, always get the current WhatsApp number from the official SASSA website rather than from a forwarded message or a random post.

Beware of fake WhatsApp numbers

Scammers advertise fake “SASSA” WhatsApp numbers and then ask for money or your banking PIN. SASSA will never ask for your card PIN or a fee. If in doubt, confirm the number on sassa.gov.za.

Method 3: USSD code

A USSD code works on any phone, including basic handsets, and does not need data. Dial the official SASSA USSD string, then follow the menu and enter your ID number when prompted. USSD is handy when the network is slow or you have run out of airtime for data, though a small USSD charge may apply depending on your network.

Method 4: The SASSA call centre

If you would rather speak to a person, you can phone the SASSA toll-free line on 0800 60 10 11. Call centres are busiest early in the month around payment dates, so if you can, call mid-morning later in the month. Have your ID number ready and be prepared to answer a few identity questions.

When your status will not load

Sometimes a check fails or shows nothing at all. This is usually temporary. Try these steps in order:

  1. Double-check that your ID number and phone number are typed correctly.
  2. Wait an hour and try again — the service is busiest just before and after payment dates.
  3. Try a different method, such as USSD instead of the website.
  4. If it still fails after a day or two, contact SASSA directly through the channels on our contact page.

A blank result is not a decline

If your status does not appear, it does not mean you were declined. It usually means the system is busy or your details were entered slightly differently from your application. Keep the wording of a real decline in mind — our declined status guide covers that separately.

Frequently asked questions

Does it cost anything to check my SASSA status?

No. Every official channel — the SRD website, WhatsApp, USSD and the call centre — is free to use. You should never pay a person or an agent to check your status for you.

How often should I check my status?

For the SRD grant, it is worth checking each month because approvals are decided monthly. For other grants, you mainly need to check while your application is being processed and if a payment does not arrive.

Can I check my status without the phone number I applied with?

It can be difficult, because SASSA often sends a confirmation to the registered number. If you have lost access to that number, contact SASSA directly to update your details before checking again.
