You can change the banking details for your SASSA SRD R370 grant in three ways: online at srd.sassa.gov.za, over the phone, or in person at a SASSA office. After you submit new details, SASSA verifies the account over roughly 3 to 7 working days. Once it is verified, every future payment goes to the new account.

The account must be in your own name exactly as it appears on your ID. You cannot use a family member's, partner's or friend's account, even with their permission — the name has to match or verification fails.

What Banking Details Can You Update?

Go to srd.sassa.gov.za on any phone or computer with an internet connection.

  2. 2

Sign in using your 13-digit South African ID number and the one-time PIN (OTP) sent to your registered cellphone number.

  3. 3

    Open the banking details section

Choose the option to update or change your banking details from your dashboard.

  4. 4

    Enter your new account

Select your bank from the list, then type your account number and choose the account type (savings or cheque).

  5. 5

    Submit for verification

Confirm and submit. SASSA automatically sends your details to be verified against your bank.

  6. 6

    Wait for verification

Your status shows 'Bank Details Pending' for 3 to 7 working days. Once it clears, your next payment goes to the new account.

Method 2: Change Your Details by Phone or at an Office

If you cannot get online, you have two more options.

By phone

Call the SASSA toll-free helpline on 0800 60 10 11 (free from all networks, Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:00).

Have your ID document and your new bank account details ready before you call.

At a SASSA office

Take your original ID, proof of your new bank account, and your phone for OTP verification.

An official will update the details for you. This is best if the online portal keeps rejecting your submission or your identity check has failed before. Find your nearest office.

What Counts as Proof of a Bank Account?

TymeBank
Free to open at a self-service kiosk inside Pick n Pay and Boxer stores, with no paperwork and no branch visit. There are no monthly fees, and your SRD payment deposits like it would at any other bank.
Cash send
Receive the grant to your RICA-registered cellphone number (in your own name, matching your application) and collect the cash at participating retailers with your ID and a PIN. Some collection points charge a fee.
Changing Banking Details for Other SASSA Grants
The srd.sassa.gov.za portal is only for the SRD R370 grant. Other grants are changed in person.

For the Older Persons, Disability and Care Dependency grants, you must update your details at a SASSA office. Bring your original ID, proof of the new account and your SASSA card if you have one. For the Child Support Grant, the caregiver visits with their own ID, the child's birth certificate, and proof of an account in the caregiver's name.

Can You Change Details If Your Status Is Pending or Declined?

If your status is Pending

Yes, you can still update your banking details. The change is queued and applies once your application is approved and a payment is processed.

If your status is Declined

You can update your details, but this will not reverse a decline. A decline is based on your eligibility (income, other grants, UIF), not your payment method. If you think it is wrong, you need to appeal instead.

If your status is Approved

Changes take effect from the next payment cycle after verification completes. If the change is too close to your payment date, this month's payment may still go to the old account.

When Should You Submit Your Change?
SASSA pays grants on a fixed monthly cycle, so timing matters.
ActionTiming
Ideal submission window10 or more working days before your payment date
Minimum safe windowAt least 7 working days before your payment date
Submitted after the cut-offMay only take effect from the following month's payment

Check your payment date before submitting a change — see our SASSA payment dates page for the current month.

What Happens During the 3 to 7 Day Verification

During verification, SASSA confirms that:

  • The account number exists at the bank you selected
  • The account is registered in your name and matches your ID exactly
  • The account is active and able to receive deposits

While it is in progress your status shows "Bank Details Pending" and no payment goes to either account. If verification is still pending on payment day, your grant is held and paid once it clears — you do not lose the money. If it fails (wrong number, name mismatch or an inactive account), your status reverts and you can submit corrected details straight away.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a SASSA banking details change take?
Verification takes 3 to 7 working days from the day you submit. During this time your status shows 'Bank Details Pending'. Once the account is verified, your next payment goes to it. Submit your change at least 10 working days before your payment date so you do not miss a cycle.
Can I use a family member's account for SASSA?
No. SASSA checks that the account holder's name matches your ID exactly, so an account in someone else's name will always fail verification. If you do not have your own account, open a free Capitec or TymeBank account in your name.
Can I change to TymeBank for the SASSA SRD grant?
Yes. TymeBank is fully accepted for SRD payments and is free to open at a self-service kiosk in Pick n Pay or Boxer stores. Once you have your account number, update your details at srd.sassa.gov.za.
What happens if I enter the wrong banking details?
Verification will fail and your status reverts to its previous state. You can submit corrected details straight away, and a failed attempt does not block future updates. Allow another 3 to 7 working days for the new details to verify.
Can someone call me to update my SASSA banking details?
No. SASSA will never phone, SMS or WhatsApp you first to ask you to update your banking details or to share your OTP. Any such contact is a scam. Hang up and report it to 0800 60 10 11.
Can I change the banking details for the Older Persons or Disability grant online?
No. The srd.sassa.gov.za portal is only for the SRD R370 grant. For the Older Persons, Disability, Child Support and other permanent grants, you must go to a SASSA office in person with your ID and proof of your new bank account.
How many times can I change my SASSA banking details?
There is no strict published limit, but changing more than once every three months can trigger a fraud review and delay your payment. Make one change, wait for it to verify, and confirm your payment arrived before making another.
What is the Capitec branch code for SASSA?
The Capitec universal branch code is 470010. You may need it for older paper forms or in-person visits, but on srd.sassa.gov.za you only select 'Capitec Bank' from the list and no branch code is required.

Conclusion

Changing your SASSA SRD banking details is quick and free: update online at srd.sassa.gov.za, by phone on 0800 60 10 11, or in person at a SASSA office. Whichever route you take, the account must be in your own name and match your ID exactly, and verification takes 3 to 7 working days.

Submit your change at least 10 working days before your payment date, make only one change at a time, and wait for verification to finish before touching your details again. If your grant is held during verification you will not lose it — it is paid once the new account is confirmed.
